The mayor of future Olympic host city Paris says she is leaving

“I refuse to support this evil plan,” she wrote.

An Associated Press request for comment emailed to X received an automated response: "Busy now, please check back later."

Hidalgo's office said Monday's posts in French and English included her farewell

Her office said that Paris City Hall maintains its own, separate account on X.

Hidalgo's withdrawal from X follows a troubled time for the mayor. She was criticized by political opponents over the cost and necessity of a trip she took in October to the French South Pacific territories of New Caledonia and Tahiti. Next July's Olympic surfing competition will take place on Tahiti's world-famous Teahupo'o wave.

She also clashed with ministers last week over the French capital's readiness for the 2024 Summer Games. Hidalgo said some transport options were not yet ready for the period from July 26 to August 26. 11 Olympic Games. Transport Minister Clement Beaune responded by saying the mayor's comments were a "shameful" attempt to divert attention from her Pacific trip.

Hidalgo's office said her decision to leave X was not a response to recent criticism but was considered over time. Musk took control of Twitter in October 2022 and has dismantled some of its core features.

“We are faced with a very clear political project aimed at pushing aside democracy and its values in favor of powerful private interests,” Hidalgo wrote. “This medium has become a gigantic global sewer, and we should continue to wade through it?”
